If you find yourself reaching for an extra blanket because your mini split isn’t working in heat mode, you’re not alone. Mini splits are reliable systems, but like any equipment, they can run into trouble — especially during Missouri’s cold snaps. Before you assume the worst, there are a few simple things you can check on your own that might get things running again quickly.

Check the Basics First

When you’re wondering why your heat isn’t working, start with the simplest explanations. Make sure the remote or thermostat is set to heat mode, not cool or fan-only. It sounds obvious, but bumping mode settings happens more often than you’d think. Also, confirm the set temperature is higher than the current room temperature. Otherwise, the system has no reason to run.

Next, check your circuit breaker. A tripped breaker will shut the unit down completely. Reset it if needed, and watch to see if it trips again. If it does, that’s a sign of a deeper electrical issue and time to call a professional.

Inspect the Outdoor Unit

Mini splits draw heat from outdoor air (including cold air) and transfer it indoors. That process depends on the outdoor unit running properly. Go outside and take a look. Is the unit buried in snow or ice? A blocked outdoor unit can’t move air, which shuts down the heating cycle entirely. Clear away any snow, ice buildup, or debris from around the unit, and give the system a few minutes to restart.

Some ice on the outdoor coil is normal — mini splits have a built-in defrost cycle. But if the unit is completely encased in ice, that’s not normal operation and will require a technician.

Clean or Replace Your Air Filter

A clogged filter is one of the most common causes of a heater not working properly. Mini splits have washable filters inside the indoor air handler that collect dust and debris over time. When they get too dirty, airflow drops, efficiency suffers, and the system may shut itself off as a protective measure. Check your filter and clean it according to the manufacturer’s instructions. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recommends checking HVAC filters regularly to maintain good indoor air quality and system efficiency — a clean filter helps your system work the way it was designed to.

Mini Split Not Working in Heat Mode? Know When To Step Back

If you’ve gone through all these checks and your mini split is still blowing cold air or not running at all, it’s time to leave it to a licensed HVAC technician. Common issues that require professional service include low refrigerant, a faulty reversing valve (the part that switches the system between heating and cooling), sensor problems, or a compressor issue. These aren’t DIY repairs. Handling refrigerants requires EPA certification under Section 608 of the Clean Air Act. Attempting these repairs without the right credentials and tools can cause further damage and create safety risks.

The good news is that catching a problem early — before it becomes a system failure — typically means a faster, less costly fix. When something seems off with your mini split, don’t wait.
